Fine Art Portrait Photography is a new and growing art form. Oxford lists Fine Art as :
Fine Art Portrait Photography is usually inspired by art of the past, especially of the renaissance. I have studied art of this period to understand the esthetic that makes these old masters' work both timeless and extremely valuable. There are many reasons including painting technique and color theory, but the most important is the emotional connection it create with the view and the artistic statement by the artist. Click Read More to continue reading Portraits used to be reserved only for the very rich and very powerful. The subject had to stay in one position often for hours, It was a difficult process for both the model and the portrait artist. Fortunately today it takes much less time to sit for a professional portrait. The Fine Art type takes a bit longer as the backdrop, clothing, pose and lighting all have to be thoroughly thought through. This is the artistic statement of the fine art photographer, and together with the model the artist will look for a coax out a connection that will elicit emotion from the viewer once finished. Another thing about Fine Art portraits is the retouching time. This doesn't mean that the subject is greatly flawed, retouching including things like texturing of the image, color toning and color harmony, relighting and accentuating of light and shadow, known as dodge and burn. This can take up to 2 hours per image, so Fine Art Portrait Photography isn't a volume business. It's often collections of 10 or 20 images or even less, sometimes the client is looking for just one spectacular image to be printed on a giant 30x40 canvas to hang in their home. The connection with and emotional reaction from the viewer is of paramount importance. Sometimes this can be accentuated by setting and props as well as things like color and costume/clothing choice. This is intertwined with the artistic vision of the photographer and when everything comes together properly, the result is a stunning and arresting image, which when viewed in print is so powerful people have been known to be at a loss for words or even cry. This result is a true art piece which the client is proud to hang in their home and which will elicit great emotion and wonder for a lifetime.
